Abstract

In Mexico violent deaths of women have been on the rise day by day; many cases include sufficiently aggravating factors to be considered femicide, but the authorities are reluctant to classify them in this way. Yucatán, despite being the safest state in the country (Infobae, 2019: 10), is no exception to these facts. In the written press in Yucatán it is common to read news on “crimes of passion,” instead of femicides. Thus, in order to understand how the people of Yucatán think of the concept of “femicide,” a survey was carried out in Mérida. INEGI statistics were also used and a review of newspaper reports on femicides in the entity.  In this document we reveal the origins of sexism and the concept of femicide and its distinctive traits in Yucatán, both permeated by traditional culture and the crisis of masculinity, which have provoked an increase in violence against women culminating in femicide This article presents the preliminary results of this research, as well as an interpretative analysis of the data collected.
