Abstract
Despite the achievements of the gay movement, gay people present problems and challenges that surpass their homosexual orientation, since they generate exclusive forms of culture and social practice. That is to say, although gayness has emerged as a set of sexual liberation values, paradoxically, the notions of gay pride have created margins where some non-heterosexual people are considered as being devalued, invalid, invisible or illegitimate. This has given rise to fragmentations and conflicts that challenge not only the understanding of gay people and culture, but also our conceptions of homosexuality. This article discusses these concerns with the aim of exploring the limits and shortcomings of gay pride and formulating a critical approach to aspects relevant for the understanding of gay culture.
