Abstract

Based on a personal history, this article analyzes the development of the gay reality in Spain over the past thirty years. The text argues that the gay movement has failed in its fight against homophobia. Gay critique towards hegemonic masculinity has hardly had any consequences in the overall society. Homophobia affects all men, not only gays. Spain is one of the few countries where legal equality already exists for gays. Within this context, this article puts forward the need to abandon the gay category as a subject of political action, and prioritize the fight against social homophobia as a subject for post-gay political strategies.
