El culto al cocodrilo: cognición y arte del Formativo temprano en Mesoamérica

The central thesis of this article is that the veneration of crocodiles must have begun somewhere in Mesoamerica where they were an abundant species. Their image became one of the symbols most widely used by elites and that extensively spread throughout the cultural landscape. Some archaeologists argue that the absence of stone sculpture outside the Olmec heartland means this society had no hegemony over distant areas such as the Mexican highlands. In this respect it is suggested that the hegemony of the Olmec elite is reflected in the veneration of the crocodile in its heartland, which explains the constant presence of this expression in San Lorenzo, Veracruz, turning it into a pilgrimage center. Finally, in an effort to avoid confusion stemming from a “Christian” viewpoint of Mesoamerican art, we advocate animistic interpretations, specifically reinterpre-ting “St. Andrew’s Cross” as a sign/symbol to be read as human sacrifice: the Cross of Human Sacrifice (CHS).
