Abstract

Shortly after the birth of the nation, a young Creole who attempted to forge a future in trade, with no family inheritance to rely on, found himself on a very rough road, as he explains in his autobiographical notes. At the beginning he had the support of two widowed Creole women who held in some esteem, but at the same time, they thought of this help as a strategy to protect their own interests.
