Abstract
This paper studies the interaction of two fields of business that have not been explored jointly: private investment in Pachuca mining and the Mexico-Veracruz railroad. Between 1849 and 1873, two events marked the productive activities in the region formerly of the State of Mexico (today Hidalgo): the formation of the Sociedad Aviadora de Minas de Pachuca y Real del Monte (which sponsored mining undertakings) and the consolidation of the Ferrocarril de México to Veracruz. Mexican businessman Manuel Escandón played a prominent role in both companies due to the rise of the silver mines, which enabled him to consolidate the railroad project. These companies had a positive impact on the political and economic integration of the region.
