Abstract
This article aims to study the successful insertion of a mulatto merchant from the island of Curaçao, Nicolás Danies Palm, into the elites of New Granada in the 19th century. Through this case study, it is proposed that marriage alliances with characters of “white lineage” and commercial relations with powerful businessmen from the United States constituted the main strategies used by some Caribbean mulatto merchants to insert themselves into the economic, social, economic, and political power structures. In this way, it is argued, they managed to overcome the segregation imposed by the racial prejudices of the white sectors of power. The Danies case demonstrates such an argument.
