Abstract
With the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing, it has become possible to investigate various aspects of Classic Maya civilisation, such as the interpersonal and hierarchical relationships among the elites, which were recorded on numerous sculptured monuments. The possible accession in Piedras Negras of the El Cayo ruler Aj Chak Wayab' K'utim is an additional piece in a long list of inaugurations of subordinate nobles in the centre of their overlords. The recording of subordinate accessions is mainly restricted to the western Maya region, which may reflect different political strategies of these sites during the Late Classic Period.
