Resumen

El trabajo se centra en explorar la intersección entre el sufrimiento psicológico, la identidad sexual y el riesgo de suicidio en adolescentes en una comunidad maya. Se utilizó un diseño de investigación cualitativa con entrevistas semiestructuradas para obtener una comprensión profunda de los factores que contribuyen a la ideación suicida y los recursos de afrontamiento utilizados por los jóvenes. La muestra se integró con 17 adolescentes mayas seleccionados de una base de datos del centro de salud local. Los resultados del estudio revelaron desafíos significativos para ellos, incluida la discriminación cultural y el estigma relacionado con la salud mental, así como la presión social y las expectativas culturales sobre roles de género. Además, las experiencias de trauma y adversidad, junto con la falta de apoyo social y familiar, contribuyeron a la vulnerabilidad de estos adolescentes, quienes también enfrentaron desafíos en cuanto a la aceptación de su identidad sexual en un entorno culturalmente conservador, lo que limitaba su acceso a servicios de salud mental especializados. Sin embargo, se identificaron estrategias de afrontamiento y resiliencia, como el recurso a prácticas tradicionales de sanación y el apoyo de amistades cercanas o líderes comunitarios. Estos hallazgos destacan la necesidad de políticas y programas de salud mental que sean culturalmente sensibles y efectivos para abordar los factores de riesgo y promover la resiliencia en adolescentes mayas. Al comprender mejor las experiencias y necesidades de esta población, se puede trabajar hacia la reducción de disparidades en la salud mental y promover el bienestar emocional en comunidades indígenas.
