Abstract

It is the following communication’s aim to analyze the changes and strategies pregnant women with HIV carry out to reduce risks related to sexual and reproductive health. We developed a bio-cultural, social-medical investigation utilizing a qualitative methodology that is integrated by six cases. For that matter, we conducted in-depth interviews on Inper users. The analysis emphasized the socialization and alternation processes in the social construction of reality and their interaction with HIV and pregnancy. In order to investigate them at a microstructural level, it was necessary to consider the ideas of body, gender, reproduction and bonding process. The analysis showed that the strategies are developed within a dialectic network of potentialities and vulnerabilities that are related to the moment of diagnosis, experience and the women’s support networks; for example, the use of male condom that is taken into account only with temporary mates, its use turns more complex when we talk about steady mates due to gender structures. Same case with reproduction, it is not always presented as a desire but as a consequence of cultural inequality in relationships, the body representation, the illness reality and the suffering associated to the antiretroviral drugs consumption.
