Abstract

This research had as an objective to know and analyze the self-care practices of a group of women who live in a vulnerable urban area. The women are fourteen lowclass housewives from Mérida, Yucatán. Two techniques were used: a questionnaire and a fill-in-the-blanks drill as part of a workshop based on Gestalt theory. The results indicate women carry self-care practices out, health related mostly, and have a self-concept linked to the traditional gender role. The lack of time and economic resources is a restricting factor to these women’s self care practices, specially to the ones related to beauty and sports. Nurturing and religiousness are highly valued satisfiers.
