Abstract

This research addresses the intersection of sexuality and sports among women. It presents the voices of thirteen women who play football (not professionally) in Morelos and who have sexual-affective relationships with women. They are women’s life experiences that have not been commonly represented in studies on the subject (which generally deal with the lives of professional athletes, artists, scholars, or activists). Their occupations are diverse: gardeners, housekeepers, teachers, taxi drivers, among others. I discuss how they live and conceptualize their sexuality, which goes against the social norm (exclusively heterosexual practices).  I examine the concepts: “girly/boyish”, “having a partner”, and “fooling around” in contrast to “the lesbian.” I problematize their sexuality in sports contexts by analyzing it as a women’s space (in this case, football players) to create a fluid sexuality that eludes the heterosexual norm.
