Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to determine the connotations, experiences, and meanings of contraceptive use in the sexual relations of adolescents in two contexts in Mexico. Research was conducted on the basis of the qualitative paradigm following the theoretical line of social constructionism. The data generated reveal that based on the context, the connotations and meanings surrounding the use of contraceptives in adolescent sexual relations will vary. Much of this will depend on the information available on the various methods to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, as well as the biology of reproduction, but above all on the image that is constructed of the other, which marks the type of encounter and contraceptive use during sex.
