Abstract

In the 1940s Robert Weitlaner defined a ceramic type in Central Guerrero which he
called Yestla-Naranjo, which was associated with other cultural features such as copper artifacts, architectural structures, and burials. Besides characterizing the ceramic type, our main objective is to present a Yestla-Naranjo vessel excavated in Xochipala, Guerrero in 1978. The unique iconography motivated us to attempt its interpretation by means of comparison with other Yestla-Naranjo vessels and 16th century historical sources which resulted in the identification of specific motifs with symbolism that reflects the worldview of societies that inhabited Central Guerrero during the Late Classic and Early Postclassic periods.
