Abstract

The objective of this research was to test the acoustics in various architectural structures
in the Yucatán and Chiapas region to establish correspondences in recorded resonance
frequencies. “White noise,” “pink noise” and sine waves of “tone sweep” were used in this research to determine the domain of frequencies that resonate within pyramids, ceremonial structures, and patios in Palenque, Oxkintok, Uxmal, Kabah, and Chichén Itzá. Prior to this work, the resonance of the structures in the study areas had not been fully analyzed using advanced digital processing.
This article summarizes several years of study (1999 to 2003), during which ad hoc methods were developed to capture the reverberating sounds using Neumann high quality electronic microphones, in addition to a comparative analysis (2004–2009). Profiles of each musical sound and its noise-signal ratio in a number of precincts in Yucatán and Chiapas are presented in this paper.
