Abstract
This article aims to discuss a series of new ceramic indicators for the identification of the Early Postclassic in the Mixteca Alta, Mexico, along with a general evaluation of its chronological framework. The current hypothesis of a hiatus between the Late Classic and the Late Postclassic periods is re-examined in the light of new ceramic analyses that suggest a continuity between the two periods. We also propose that a ceramic complex called Ixtapa, dated by radiocarbon, corresponds to ceramics consumed in the Mixteca Alta during the Early Postclassic. Comparison of the Ixtapa complex with ceramic complexes from central valleys of Oaxaca reveals a series of similarities consistent with the existence of relations between the two regions, especially between the Mixteca Alta and Etla and Zaachila in the central valleys, during the Early Postclassic period.
