Abstract
Reconstructions of the Prehispanic economic subsystems of procurement, production, distribution and consumption are constrained by the nature of the archaeological base-data available for interpretation. In regards to ancient obsidian economies, one type of base-data comes from quarry sites at obsidian source areas. Intensive surface survey of the Zaragoza-Oyameles obsidian source area in eastern Puebla, Mexico during three field seasons in 2012-2014 identified and measured 77 obsidian quarry pits and one trench. The largest quarry pit at Extraction Area 34 was mapped in detail to estimate the volume of material removed from it using isopleth maps created by the program Surfer®. This information, combined with
estimates of macrocore size and mass determined through replication experiments, results in an estimated range of macrocores and large polyhedral
cores that could have been produced at this one quarry locus. Finally, labor estimates for the extraction of the cores suggest that a very large number of cores could have been produced on a part-time basis by a handful of artisans.
