Abstract
Based on a historical review and drawing on data from recent years, this paper discusses interregional interaction in southern Veracruz and the western lowlands of the Maya area. We explore the evidence for these interactions using three data sets, each emphasizing a particular time frame. First, we consider the development of the Stela-Base-Throne sculptural complex, a representational phenomenon that originated during the Formative period and continued into the Classic period. Subsequently, we turn our attention to fine-paste ceramics (untampered). This type of pottery has played an important role in the evaluation of connections between the Maya coast and other groups. Finally, we present information on hollow molded figurines, whose use spanned both the Classic and Post classic periods. These figurine data especially emphasize coastal connections, revealing that there was interaction between sites in Campeche, Tabasco, and Veracruz.
