Architectural features of some constructions of early stages in Teotihuacan

Abstract

The information on early occupation in the area of the city of Teotihuacan is scarce and is mainly related to offerings and the first constructions of the Moon and Sun pyramids. Between 2002 and 2008, extensive excavations thanks to the Feathered Serpent Temple Research and Conservation Project and the Teotihuacan First Occupations Project made it possible to discover the first architectural compounds built at the Ciudadela complex between A.D. 1 and 50 (Early Tzacualli Phase). The almost complete exploration of one of the compounds, located to the south of the Adosada Platform, changed the idea we had about the city’s general characteristics. The study of construction and surfacing materials, as well as the spatial distribution of objects in these areas represent a preliminary attempt to shed light on the general characteristics of a compound occupied by an elite group in early times.
