La economía de la lítica tallada y las élites en Mesoamérica prehispánica: el caso de Xochicalco durante el Epiclásico

Resumen

Una de las ciudades prehispánicas más impresionantes de México es Xochicalco, que se convirtió en una entidad poderosa durante el turbulento Epiclásico (650-900 d. C.). Entre muchos otros, a través del relativamente reciente Proyecto arqueológico Especial Xochicalco se efectuó la excavación del núcleo cívico-ceremonial. Al respecto, el presente artículo analiza e interpreta los artefactos de obsidiana recuperados, y describe tanto las fuentes y tecnologías de obsidiana representadas en este conjunto como la aparente función de sus artefactos. El estudio concluye que la élite gobernante no estuvo directamente involucrada en la economía de los artefactos de lítica tallada, pero, en cambio, probablemente se aprovisionaron en el mercado central de la ciudad como todos los demás. Que las élites tuvieron poca participación en esta dimensión de la economía difiere de lo que se ha establecido para algunas entidades políticas mesoamericanas. Por tanto, los hallazgos del Proyecto Especial Xochicalco representan información importante y relevante para comprender cómo varió en las economías políticas mesoamericanas, en el espacio y el tiempo, la producción artesanal de artefactos de lítica tallada.
