Abstract

This paper undertakes an issue neglected by archaeological research: communication between pre-Hispanic groups. The main cause that hinders the study of this subject resides in the difficulty of building solid links between archaeological data and communication. To bridge the gap generated by the separation between researchers today and communication in archaeological societies, this research uses a model of reading, based on the semiotic principles, assuming that rock art represented a direct result from communication employed by archaeological groups. To prove the viability of this model, it is applied at the Cerro Calizo petroglyphs, located at the archaeological site of La Proveedora, Sonora.
