Xatachío: a small monumental site in the Mixteca Alta
Abstract
In 2007 archaeological explorations were resumed at the site of Xatachío, located in the Valley of Tamazulapan in the Mixteca Alta, Oaxaca. These explorations contributed to defining the stratigraphy and knowledge of burial traditions through the excavation of a partially looted tomb. A survey was also conducted to distinguish the main architectural structures, where systematic collections of ceramic materials were made. This research provides important information on this site, particularly related to its long occupation, which began in the Preclassic and ended at the time of Spanish contact. The large amount of monumental architecture built in proportion to the population estimates is an unusual feature for the Mixtec region.Downloads
