Abstract

The devotional importance of the former Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico City has required its preservation: as a result, since the eighteenth century, diverse interventions have been necessary. Some projects opted for the demolition of the church to rebuild it; others chose to do maintenance work to avoid interrupting worship. In this article, I analyze a specific intervention, the previously unknown work of the engineer and architect Emilio Dondé Preciat between 1878 and 1879, which is part of the church’s construction history. There the young Dondé Preciat carried out one of his earliest conservation projects by consolidating the Tabernacle (Sagrario) of the Basilica with an iron structure.
