Los frontones de pelota vasca en la Ciudad de México: siglo XIX y primeras décadas del XX

Abstract

In the late nineteenth century, there were three buildings in Mexico City for playing pelota vasca (jai-alai) and that were known as frontons. The first was called Frontón Eder Jai, located on the streets of Inválidos and La Paz, behind the Café Colón, very near the Paseo de la Reforma; it was open-air, without a roof and was built in 1895. The second was called Frontón Jai Alai, 1896, on the street of Bucareli, adjoining the Plaza de Toros. The third one was from 1897 and was called Frontón Nacional; it was completely roofed and was on the street of Iturbide (parallel to Bucareli) and it was the one that continued until the first decades of the twentieth century. The aim is to study the social, cultural and architectural aspects of these building,
which served for public amusement.
