Abstract

From the arrival of the Spaniards to the shores of the Gulf of Mexico to the first decades of the twentieth century, the coasts and roads of the modern-day state of Veracruz were the main factors that conditioned the Spanish Crown’s defense policies and projects and the national government, as well as the attack plans of the powers that tried to take control of Mexico throughout the nineteenth century. As a result, a vast and heterogeneous conglomerate of fortifications, military buildings and vestiges has survived in Veracruz in contrast to the situation in other states. The fact that these defensive constructions span virtually all phases of the Mexican state’s formation makes them unique and explains the undeniable historical and cultural significance of fortified patrimony in Veracruz.
