Abstract

In 1853 Antonio López de Santa Anna decreed the creation of the National School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine in the Hospicio de San Jacinto and its sprawling lands on Calzada Tacuba. However, the history of the school and the building was not simple, as it underwent renovations, other structures were added to the property, and the school faced attempts to close it down. By the late nineteenth century, construction began on a new building, which was never finished and that always remained in symbiosis with the former hospice. This paper examines the construction stages of this new building and its relationship with the former hospice and the vast properties, which gave rise to other structures and urban expansion.
