Abstract

This article offers a reflection on the small-scale representations of scenes created in nunneries, their visual and symbolic sources, as well as identifying the data they contain, for they bear witness to a lifestyle now lost. They are also indicative of the vision that the nuns had of their own space. The reasons and purposes of these creations are analyzed, in addition to arguing for the need to catalogue these works, overlooked by scholars in the past, because works of this type in cloisters, museums, and private Spanish collections are a potentially valuable source of information about cloistered life.
