Abstract

Reading was part of the training and daily routine in nuns’ convents to prepare novices to take vows. Annotated manuscripts denote their function, use, and ownership. Similar types of authors and subjects found in convent libraries reveal a type of readership that also attests to the sale of books and shared interest in content among vendors and printers. These works promoted the lives of saints and their virtues as models to follow. Saint Teresa of Jesus, Mary of Jesus of Agreda, Alonso Rodríguez, Alonso de Andrade, Miguel de Santander, Alonso de Villega, Juan Antonio de Oviedo, Francisco de Sales, and José de los Reyes were some of the authors commonly found in convents.
