Abstract

The eruption of the Chichonal volcano (Chiapas) in 1982 was a watershed in the history of the Zoque Chiapaneca ethnic group and in the cultural patrimony built by the order of the Dominicans in that region. The way the three levels of government faced the material losses of that event contrasts to the solution the Zoque peoples in the construction and reconstruction of their homes. Although the use of volcanic material as a building resource goes back to ancient times, it was in the case that concerns us, a new construction experience and the only resource that the earthquake survivors had to raise their villages again. This work deals with this experience as well as the irreparable losses of some of its religious buildings and the recovery of others that remained standing.
