Technical topics in the study of historical architecture are fundamental for the development of compatible intervention techniques that, for their origin, tend to be more respectful and with less of an impact. In the case of viceregal hydraulic engineering, it is possible, through the analysis of its components, to understand the operation of this type of element in the past to obtain data on the vestiges, data that would otherwise go unnoticed. Two cases are presented: the latrines of the holy desert of Cuajimalpa and the San Juan mill in Tlaxcala, both advanced examples of water and thermal insulation. With their analyses we can understand how the abundant vestiges that we find in our country contain more information than can be seen at first glance.
