Abstract
The end of the Cristero Rebellion left a feeling of inconformity within the Roman Catholic Church for it felt that the Mexican state had deprived it of social places it had occupied for centuries. Thus, after signing the agreements of 1929, the church set out to reposition itself in society. Education was one the Church’s priorities, in which it sought to recover its control and to block State policies from filtering into it. Alternatives were considered to reach primary school children and older youth; the Church backed the Scouts of Mexico, an association that included religion in its advancement program, whereas the State granted recognition to Mexican Explorers, an organization that highlighted the nationalist spirit of the time.
