La Liga Nacional de la Defensa de la Libertad Religiosa desde los ojos del Estado mexicano

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to show the manner in which the principal members of the National League in Defense of Religious Freedom were described in the reports of secret agents of the Mexican Ministry of the Interior. It also discusses strategies for monitoring and controlling the Catholic opposition during the Cristero Rebellion between 1925 and 1929. This article supports the hypothesis that the secret department known as the Departamento Confidencial was an institution whose performance was marked by improvisation, although it was not a failure. Its efficiency varied over time and was intimately tied to the political context of the country.
