Abstract

The zombie is one of the most emblematic mythical figures of the twentyfirst century and this paper explores some of the main attributes that the mass media has given to this character. This paper explores the different transformations that zombies have undergone from their origin in Haiti to the present. By means of an analogy with the contemporary sociohistorical context, their function is proposed as an incarnation of a society at risk of dissolution. The article suggests that faced with a situation globally perceived as increasingly unsafe, zombie imagery acts by providing virtual means for individual crisis management.
