Este artículo aborda la vida de Joseph Banks (1743-1820), un explorador y naturalista que escasamente ha sido incorporado a la historia de la antropología. A través del estudio de las entradas de su diario de viaje se analiza su estancia de tres meses en Tahití durante un viaje al Pacífico Sur en el HMS Endeavour, comandado por el célebre capitán James Cook entre 1769 y 1771. En Tahití, Joseph Banks entabló sólidas relaciones interpersonales que le permitieron elaborar descripciones y reflexiones de corte antropológico y alcanzar una profunda comprensión de la cultura local. El objetivo de este texto es colocar a Banks como un precursor cuyas contribuciones son aún significativas para la disciplina antropológica y la etnografía contemporánea.
