Abstract

A case study of Spanish exiles in Mexico through the experience of immigrants from Andalusia. This article details its sources and remarks on the importance of oral history on this subject. It also analyzes Mexican president Lázaro Cárdenas’s position on the Spanish Civil War and his aims in receiving the exiles from the defeated Republic, their experience in France, and their journey to Mexico, as well as their experience in this country from a labor, social, and cultural perspective. It includes quantitative data to present a profile of the people who came from Andalusia, particularly in terms of their numbers, age groups, marital status, province of origin and occupation, among other aspects.
