This essay analyzes the major lines and intellectual coordinates that pervaded the political thought and praxis of the Sociedad Guadalajarés [sic] de Amigos Deseosos de la Ilustración (1821-1826) through the brochures and pamphlets they published, as well as their journal La Estrella Polar. It examines the public debate triggered by the “use” of some key concepts, values, and symbols that outlined their political identity, and the mechanisms they deployed in the city of Guadalajara within the framework of the incipient “public space” of the first independent Mexico.
