Abstract

Community museums in Mexico emerged as part of a strategy to encourage cultural
heritage conservation by creating a connection between local communities and economic development through the promotion of cultural tourism. Throughout the country, community museums such as the one in Tenochtitlán, Veracruz, bring the archaeological past to life for modern inhabitants.
Creating and maintaining a public space dedicated to an ancient culture is a daunting task
and doing so in a town where the modern population lacks ties to the region’s ancient inhabitants is a truly impressive feat. There is currently a pressing need to recognize past and current achievements and also to identify how best to implement new museum strategies in the future. In the Olmec region, where distinct cultural and environmental settings converge, this is of particular importance in terms of fostering appreciation for Mexico’s cultural heritage.
