Abstract

The monastery of Saint Catherine of Siena, founded in Havana in 1688 by the Dominican Order, was the second convent established in the city for nuns. Its significance is fundamental not only from the religious and spiritual perspective, but also for its cultural and humanistic value. It played an important role in the education of women and had two important properties in the city, where it sheltered nuns persecuted in their countries of origin. Over the years, it has created a religious community that welcomed—and continues to welcome—nuns from around the world.
