Abstract
In August 1837, a group of illiterate peasants from northern New Mexico rebelled against the local authorities and took control of the department. Witnesses believed the revolt was attributable to the American influence which wanted to repeat the Texas experience. Yet the violence spread by the rebels moves the author to believe that the main motive behind it was severe social resentment.
