Abstract

The prophecies associated with awaiting a radical change in society are an important component within the belief system of the component groups that make up the Movement of Mexicanism. Broadly speaking, these beliefs are divided into two types: those linked with the nativist and revitalising nationalist ideology, and those associated with the para-religious universe of the new age. If the former belong to the most radical and popular Mexican neo-indianism, then the latter are shared by the most elitist and eclectic groups. In both cases, the arrival of the new historical age, dominated by the ethos of pre-Hispanic civilization, or a pre-Hispanic indigenous spirituality, is provided in two different forms. This paper describes and analyzes some of these prophecies, showing the order of the symbolic principles, as well as the ideological ghosts which support the subjective viewpoints of the different currents of this movement: radical Mexicanism and neo-Mexicanism.
