This paper describes the sociolinguistic situation of an orthodox Mennonite community in southern Mexico. Particular sociolinguistic phenomena are observed within this community, the product of a long history of languages in contact whilst in relative isolation. Based on a historical and linguistic account, the definitions of diglossia and triglosia are examined; the sociolinguistic process of the community with respect to its two Germanic languages is documented and its importance regarding the study of the dynamics of languages in contact.
