The objective of this work is to identify the relationship between the visual and written discourse in the section on the cosmogonic eras in the Codex Vaticanus A. Analysis focuses on how classic themes from the imagery of Nahua groups in Central Mexico were reconfigured to present them to readers unfamiliar with this visual culture in a completely new format: European books. Inspired by the chronicle genre, the <i>tlacuiloque</i> reconfigured the cosmogonic account and its chronological structure, highlighting the advent of sacrificial technology as the key episode that defined the transition from the Fourth to Fifth Sun or Era. The importance of sacrifice, the phenomenon that reshaped the ethical sphere of humanity in the new era, was visually expressed in a way that contrasts with the brutal representations of human sacrifice in other colonial sources, redeeming this tradition that was to a degree comparable to Christian penitential practices.
