Abstract

This paper describes the construction of a data logger for use in conservation, it is based on the tools and philosophy of the maker movement. The requirements of a data logger for monitoring the environmental conditions of storage spaces for heritage collections are presented, such as: the precision and resolution of the sensor, the power source, the memory capacity, the way to access to data, durability, size, and cost. The result is a data logger that is 10 times cheaper and that yields identical results to a commercial one, but with significant differences in the way it is operated by the user. The applied methodology stands out as a low-cost alternative, applicable to a wide range of problems and applications in the conservation profession.
