Abstract
This article presents results of the study of both ancient limestone mortar technology used by the archaeological Maya to decorate the Acropolis of Ek Balam, and the modern mortar technology used for conservation purposes. Different laboratory techniques proved useful to determine ef ciency of modern mortars for conservation purposes, based on results obtained from studying ancient mortars. In this work we discuss ancient technology employed by the ancient Maya for decorating massive architecture. Floors and wall plasters, and different mortars used in varied construction features have been sampled in order to characterize and determine physical properties. Mortars used in conservation had been studied trying to imitate the best qualities of ancient putties created by archaeological Maya.
