Investigar para preservar: rescate de la pintura mural conventual en Tlayacapan y Totolapan tras el sismo del 19 de septiembre de 2017

The World Heritage architectural ensemble of 14 convents located on the slopes of the Popocatepetl volcano was severely damaged by the earthquake of September 19th, 2017. This paper presents the Proyecto de rescate de la pintura mural en los conjuntos conventuales de la ruta de los volcanes, organized by the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México to perform the rescue, documentation, organization and storage of the 16th-century mural paintings that collapsed in ten monasteries situated in the state of Morelos (1994 UNESCO Nomination). Throughout its three first stages, this experimental initiative has focused on the convents of San Juan Bautista Tlayacapan and San Guillermo Totolapan. The article describes the work of an interdisciplinary group of academics and students from UNAM, who designed and carried out an emergency post-earthquake strategy, which allowed the safeguard of the fragments of mural paintings. The initiative is articulated as a response in emergency conditions for the protection of fragmented murals that brings light to the importance of addressing conjunct actions from the different institutions and sectors committed with cultural heritage in order to guarantee its preservation.
